Oh No Not
Head Lice !
What is the best
treatment for head lice available today?
The fact of the matter is that most children will come into
contact with head lice when they begin school or day
care. And most children will have lice or nits at some
point in their lives. The important thing to remember
is that it is not dangerous. It is, however,
contagious and very annoying.
Within the first month of school I can
pretty much guarantee that I will receive the letter. I’m
sure you’ve received it too. It’s the letter that states
something along the lines of, “Dear Parent, This is to inform
you that there has been a case of head lice in your child’s
class room…” Not the letter we like to receive. In
fact, the first time you receive that letter may induce panic
and anxiety in some parents, but don’t fear - it really isn’t
the end of the world.
If you have a child that is about to enter daycare or
school, you might want to educate yourself on how to protect
your child from getting head lice and how to deal with it when
and if it does happen.

In all honesty, it still comes down to the basics. Have you
ever had head lice before? If the answer is yes, then I would
wager that you already know the solution. I'm referring to the
shampoo. This is still the home treatment for head lice. Now, I
can't guarantee that it's the absolute best and most effective
treatment for head lice to date, but it is what's offered and
typically recommended.
Of course NASA scientists may have a more advanced solution
lying around. However, I doubt we'll see it any time soon!!
The Directors of Health Promotion and
Information have lots of info on head lice on their
site.
Some people are concerned about the treatments that are
available as they normally involve the use of harsh
chemicals.
Here is a cure I have heard
about which is natural.
This included soaking the children’s hair in olive oil and
placing a plastic bag over the hair for several hours. The
olive oil smothers the lice. This procedure as with all lice
remedies had to be repeated at intervals to kill the eggs that
the lice lay in the hair follicles.
After several bottles of olive oil and multiple applications
the family was finally rid of the lice. They did like
this treatment over other lice remedies that they have had to
use in the past because they were not placing harsh chemicals
on the children.
Get the facts by either talking to your family
doctor or getting a fact sheet on head lice from a reputable
online organization, such as the one above. This will
ease your mind. Head lice can be very annoying but educating
yourself on the subject will help you to gain control of the
situation in a short time.
There are lots of sites to check out here are just a
few.
